Black History Month Program Guidelines
Updated for 24-25 School Year
Origin of Black History Month: Carter G. Woodson believed that it was important to uplift and celebrate the accomplishments of African American people. In 1976, Black History Month was founded as a way for African American people to demonstrate pride in their heritage and be celebrated for many of the overlooked accomplishments of the community. Today, we continue to celebrate and elevate Black History Month as a way to commemorate the legacy of many famous African Americans and to honor the contributions still being made today.
Black History Month Program:
The Black History Month Program is designed to enhance cross-cultural awareness and promote harmony among all participants.
The Black History Month Program should recognize the history, achievements, and contributions made by Americans in our society to promote equality.
The focus of the program should be educational and encourage positive interactions among the performers and the school community.
The creation of the program will be a collaborative process between student performers and adult advisors. The process should include adult oversight, the creative work of student voice, and adherence to the guidelines.
